Creating a New Reality for Organ Donation

Save Lives Now New York is the only organization in New York State focused on exploring public policy initiatives to significantly increase the supply of organs available for transplant … and to save the lives of almost 10,000 New Yorkers currently on the waiting list. New York State and the nation have seen the demand for organs grow each year, while donations have leveled off and, most recently, declined.

The organ donation system in New York State is an unmitigated failure with New York ranking second to last in the nation with only a 15% sign-up rate on the state donor registry.

Rather than “tweaking” the current failed system, it must be significantly overhauled. This can happen by changing it from “expressed consent” based on altruistic sign-ups to a new system based on “presumed consent” where everyone is assumed to be a donor unless they decide to “opt out”. Another major initiative to explore is the use of appropriate financial incentives to advance organ donation.
